From the Editor
With several of my regular supporters on holiday I was delighted to have support from some new contributors and there have also been some news items of interest to our readers.
Sad news is the demise of Heyfordian, a name which had been around the whole time I have lived in the area.
From the new side of things, a Tourist Bus has been introduced in Faringdon, which I hope succeeds.
We have a report of a Carousel driver who has served 20 years with the company.
Truck Festival 2023 is reported on by Jack Cooper.
James Freeman has produced a nice report for Rail Replacement services in Oxford on July 29th.
Several replies have added more history for services between Oxford and Newbury under Readers Write.
Jack Cooper spent time in London and provides lovely pictures for Buses in the Landscape.
George Candelin has provided some older but interesting pictures of local buses plus coach visitors to Oxford.
The latest fleet list for Arriva, High Wycombe is provided by the company.
There are some significant changes to the services of Carousel including an extension to Windsor.
Jack Cooper recounts a journey from London to Windsor using one of the new Londonline deckers of Reading Bus.
Stagecoach West are partners with Safe Space charity.
We have pictures from London and finally the latest from Ensignbus dealers.
The next issue will be on August 16th allowing your Editor a welcome rest.
Coach operator Heyfordian Travel of Bicester suddenly ceased trading on 1 August after 76 years in business. It cited a number of reasons for the decision, including inflation and rising costs, driver shortages, and what the business says are “massive interest charges on our Bounce Back Loan.”
Heyfordian latterly held O-Licences in the East of England and the West of England traffic areas, which in total authorised the operation of 70 vehicles from five operating centres.
A brief announcement on the operator’s website notes that “it has become impossible to continue” for the business, which was founded in 1947. Heyfordian’s Trusted Travel Reviews show an average score of 4.9 out of 5 for the company, which was a well-respected member of the coach industry.
An email to Heyfordian staff from General Manager Stephen Smith on the morning of 1 August advises them that the owners had made “concerted efforts over recent months to keep the company going.”
It notes that the Directors of Heyfordian took the decision to cease trading voluntarily.
Oxford Bus Company wasted no time in expressing its sympathy for the decision by Heyfordian’s owners to bring the business to an end.
The Go-Ahead Group subsidiary invited drivers who have lost their jobs to consider applying for one of its vacancies. It is understood that staff with Heyfordian Travel had no prior knowledge of the decision to close.
The most recent accounts for the business, filed on 23 September 2022 for the year ending 31 December 2021, note that while the pandemic period had a major effect on Heyfordian, support from various third parties – including government schemes – had enabled it “to remain solvent and confident of a good recovery.” No going concern worries were highlighted in those accounts.

Tourist Bus - Faringdon Town Council
A trial of a hop on hop off tourist bus is coming to Faringdon this summer
One of Carousel Buses first drivers celebrates 20 years behind the wheel
Shamas Kayani has clocked up two-decades driving buses – and is now sharing his knowledge with new recruits.
Mr Kayani who hailed bus driving as the “best job in the world” still loves
serving his passengers around Buckinghamshire.
When he joined Carousel Buses as one of its first drivers and employees in 2003
under the original owners, Girls Aloud topped the UK charts and England won the
Rugby World Cup.
A familiar face on Carousel Buses services, he is now passionately sharing his
years of experience with new drivers as they undergo training and go into
service.
To honour Mr Kayani’s long-service he was awarded the Lifetime Star Award at the
Oxford Bus Group’s recent Really Amazing Awards.
Mr Kayani points to the strong sense of camaraderie at the company,
opportunities for progression and effective senior management as reasons behind
his long service.
He said: “I’ve loved being a bus driver over the last 20 years, it is the best
job in the world. This company also feels like home to me.“I’ve always enjoyed interacting with passengers and my colleagues over the
years, I have made many friends and I am now training the newer drivers when
they join.“
The management listen to us and make the right decisions; they have brought in
newer buses over the years which are more comfortable and better for drivers.”Carousel Buses is currently recruiting for bus drivers to serve its main routes
around Buckinghamshire and its transport-on-demand PickMeUp service.
Full
training is provided and drivers earn between £32,000 and £39,000 per year on
average.
Luke Marion, Carousel Buses Managing Director, said:
“Bus driving is such a
rewarding job and Shamas’ journey is a great example of how fulfilling working
at Carousel Buses is. To have experienced drivers like Shamas now sharing their experience and
knowledge with new drivers is invaluable to us and helps us further ensure an
excellent training programme for new recruits and a first-class service for our
passengers. Bus and coach drivers perform vital roles in the communities they serve and
public transport is key in connecting people, reducing congestion and improving
air quality.
At Carousel Buses we offer stable, long-term employment at competitive rates of
pay. We are currently recruiting drivers and I would encourage people to find
out more via our website.”
A subsidiary of the Go-Ahead Group, Carousel Buses employs around 80 people and operates around 45 buses in High Wycombe and the wider Buckinghamshire area. It also serves locations including Slough in Berkshire, Hemel Hempstead in
Hertfordshire and Uxbridge.

More on Newbury-Oxford services
Hugh Jaeger
Richard Sharman of Coach and Bus Week says he remembers Bennetts Coaches
of Chieveley operating a route 34 between Newbury and Oxford in the mid-1990s,
serving all the villages en route. Later, Newbury Buses took over the
route, renumbered it X34, and turned it into an express to Abingdon, avoiding
the villages. Later still, it reverted to plain 34, and Stagecoach in
Oxfordshire ran it.
Dave Harrison at Oxfordshire CC adds that routes 6 and 6A ran to Harwell Campus
until 2016, when West Berks CC cut them back to West Ilsley.
That's at least three operators in as many decades. But Didcot and Newbury keep
growing, and Harwell is a significant centre of employment. At Bus Users Oxford,
we hope that the route will attract enough riders to make OCC's subsidy
worthwhile!
I am particularly interested that the X34 was once a long-haul service between Oxford and Southampton. Was that run entirely by Oxford South Midland, or jointly with another operator?
Matthew Keyte
O&CBP edition for 27 July, one of your correspondents
asks about bus routes north from Newbury.
Copies of Thames Valley
timetables in Timetable World
for 1951 and 1968 both show a Route 112 from Newbury to Oxford via Abingdon.
The route ran hourly, daily and was operated jointly by the City of Oxford and
Thames Valley companies The journey time in 1951 was about 100
minutes end to end . . . the journey time in 1968 was pretty much the same!
I travelled on the route in around 1967 with my grandmother; we were searching for her brother who was alleged to run a transport cafe in Chieveley . . . unfortunately he had died the previous year.
Hugh Jaeger's Harwell-Newbury queries by William Jackson
As a regular bus user who has lived in Harwell Village for 44 years, I can
provide some answers to Hugh's queries about bus links between Harwell and
Newbury, Please pass them on and include this in the OC Bus Page if you
wish.
Back in the Oxford/South Midland days there was a previous X34 service
(possibly other numbers at times too) that ran
Oxford-Abingdon-Newbury-Winchester-Southampton. In some places this ran on
the old A34 and functioned as a local service, so it stopped at Rowstock and
at the main gate of what was then Harwell AERE (now Harwell Campus). A
friend's daughter used it to go to school in Newbury from Rowstock, but it
was inconveniently withdrawn when she went into the sixth form. I think this
was when Thames Transit took on Oxford/South Midland services in 1989. For a
while we then had no cross-border bus connection into West Berkshire.
Stagecoach took over Thames Transit in 1997. Some time after this they
started a 2-hourly Monday-Saturday minibus service (numbered two hundred and
something - 210?, 228?, 230?), which ran Didcot, Harwell Village, Rowstock,
Harwell AERE/Campus main gate, Chilton, East Ilsley, Compton. Hampstead
Norreys, Hermitage, Newbury. Possibly some journeys ran more directly via
Beedon and Chieveley. I think this service was supported by Oxfordshire and
West Berkshire councils. It probably ceased around 2000.
Perhaps after a further gap of no service, this
was replaced by an hourly (Monday-Saturday) service between Didcot and
Newbury operated by (the old) Newbury Buses. This service ran alternately
via Compton/Hermitage and Beedon/Chievely. I can't find my old maps or
timetables, but I think these routes were numbered 12 and 13 respectively.
Sometime in the early 2000s, route 13 was combined with the existing
Newbury-Inkpen-Hungerford service, so for a while it was even possible to
make a through journey every other hour from Didcot-Hungerford via Newbury
(I did once - the driver was very surprised!). Both routes served the old
bus station at what was by then the beginnings of Harwell Campus, so there
was a regular hourly but relatively slow service from the Campus to Newbury
for that period. This service was also supported by Oxfordshire and West
Berkshire councils, and it ceased when Oxfordshire refused to continue
supporting the Oxfordshire section of the route. I think that was around
2005.
Newbury Buses then cut back routes 12 and 13, and at some point re-numbered
them 6 and 6A, mostly running as a circular Newbury-Newbury service. The
only journeys to cross the West Berkshire/Oxfordshire boundary were early
morning, midday and late afternoon Monday-Friday journeys between Newbury
and Harwell Campus, which operated as a spur on the circular routes
(timetable from 2013 attached). These were continued by successor Newbury
companies (Weavaway then Reading Buses, both operating as Newbury and
District, and may have been supported to some extent by the Campus, but that
section was, I think, little-used, and was withdrawn almost unnoticed a few
years ago. It may have been a victim of COVID, or perhaps it was withdrawn a
year or two before then.
Anyway, it is great to have a direct service to Newbury now - although very
disappointing that Harwell Village lost its direct Oxford service (X32) in
the same reorganisation!
Certainly some interesting and informative response. Ed.

Stagecoach West partners with Safe Space charity
(l-r): Rachel Geliamassi, Managing Director of Stagecoach West; Inspector Paul Cruise; Chrissie Lowery, founder of Safe Space; Chris Nelson, Police and Crime Commissioner
Stagecoach West has partnered with the charity Safe Space to provide places of refuge for women and girls on all its buses.
Safe Space was set up by a Stroud woman in October 2022 and has since been joined by 85 shops and facilities in Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties which indicate they will provide help to females who feel vulnerable.
The charity says that already several woman have stayed in designated shops in Stroud after being followed by men, while another injured victim of domestic abuse was supported by staff at a business partnering with the scheme.
Yesterday, the Safe Space team met with Gloucestershire’s Office for the Police and Crime Commissioner, Gloucestershire Constabulary, and Stagecoach West to launch the partnership.
Rachel Geliamassi, Managing Director of Stagecoach West, says: “It made perfect sense for us to get involved and support the Safe Space scheme, with over 400 buses serving our region that’s 400 ‘safe spaces’ available to those who may need it.
“Our drivers have always been prepared to assist any passenger in distress; consistently demonstrating their compassion and understanding. Our partnership in the Safe Space initiative, proudly offers an official sanction to this practice.
“It brings us immense satisfaction to collaborate with such an important charity. Together, we’re strengthening our pledge to safety, assuring our community that we are here for them, always.”
Chrissie Lowery, founder of Safe Space, adds: “Safe Space and Stagecoach have collaborated to grow the scheme into the West with over 400 buses taking part. The Stagecoach drivers have been trained and stickers placed so that anyone who needs help can seek safety on the bus. If you are being followed, are at risk of harm and need help, just get on the bus and ask the driver for a safe space.”
